Seminar on "The Act of Killing"

DIIS Seminar on the movie The Act of Killing
Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2012 - 14:00 to 16:00

Venue: Danish Institute for International Studies, Main Auditorium, Strandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen K

The Act of Killing was the opening film of the CPH:DOX festival and is currently being shown throughout the country. The film explores the truth behind the mass murders in Indonesia in 1965-66, when at least 500,000 people were killed. How is it possible to bring the truth into the open, when terrorization has produced a culture of silence amongst families of victims, and when the killers have won? Unlike ageing Nazis or Rwandan génocidaires, Anwar Congo and his friends, whom the film follows, have not been forced by history to admit they participated in crimes against humanity. Instead, they have written their own triumphant history, becoming role models for millions of young paramilitaries.
