ADI South Asia lecture med Abhijit Roy

ADI og Centre of Global South Asian Studies ved ToRS inviterer til gæsteforelæsningen "Betty comes to India: Television, globalization and popular discourses of ‘change'" med Abhijit Roy, University of Jadhavpur.

Abstract:
Betty comes to India: Television, globalization and popular discourses of ‘change'

The paper maps the vision of the ‘modern' in Indian soap opera in an effort to complicate the popular binary of tradition/modernity and to broadly draw attention to the way the post-colonial negotiates the Global. It examines a television series Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin that seems to have gone beyond the soap opera's classical constituency of the family and the feudal regime of the feminine, debatably inaugurating in India a new trend in Hindi soaps and in the consumer cultures around them.
