Human Rights and India's Diversity

Centre of Global South Asian Studies invites you to a public guest lecture by

Susan Vishvanathan, Jawaharlal Nehru University

Professor Susan Visvanathan will speak on the questions pertaining to a secular India, and the manner in which the questions of tradition and modernity become problematised in a world which is constantly oscillating between order and conflict. The real questions of identity are located in this pendulum, where individuals decide who they are in relation to the other. Citizen rights have to be understood as the common denominator, and yet primeval identities are forged through representations of local histories and global ones. What happens to religious orientations in a secular country, where the freedom "to believe", or the freedom to "not believe" are equally posed as rights? The dialogue of religions makes good use of the spaces that lie between these varied orientations.

Professor Visvanathan is Professor of Sociology, Centre of Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
