Ildikó Bellér-Hann studied Turkish Philology, English and Archaeology at the Eötvös Lóránd University in Budapest, received her PhD in Turkish at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Cambridge in 1989, and completed her Habilitation in Central Asian Studies at the Central Asian Seminar of the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2005. Originally trained as a linguist, her research interests include the social anthropology and history of the Turkic speaking world. She has conducted fieldwork on the Black Sea coast of North-East Turkey, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China and in Kazakhstan. Between 1999 and 2009 she worked as a researcher at the Centre for Oriental Studies, Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg in Germany.
Her current research project focuses on kinship and social support in rural Xinjiang as well as perceptions of local history.
