Governing China’s Urbanization

by Chunrong Liu, Fudan-European Centre for China Studies

Urbanization has been the new buzzword in China since the formation of new leadership in 2012. While it is widely regarded as a decisive driving force of economic growth, comprehensive national strategy to lift urbanization has also generated an array of sociopolitical problems. This talk will address two critical aspects of governing challenges associated with massive urbanization in China: land-based conflicts and citizenship issues, which raise important theoretical questions concerning regime resilience and adaptation. Policy and institutional responses to these challenges will also be discussed.
