Over the past three-quarters of a century, the idea of ‘new’ India has been invoked many times. These shifts have forged, and have been forged, by new political subjects and affinities that can neither be explained through quantitative data nor party politics alone. In this field of informal politics, the emotional and the transactional aspects cohere to create ever-shifting dynamics of power.
