Beyond Domestic Borders

Lunch talk by Hyaeweol Choi, Professor of Korean Studies; Director, Korea Institute Australian National University: "Beyond Domestic Borders: Transnational Mobility in the Making of Modern Korea, 1920 ‐ 1945"

"I am currently working on a book manuscript that considers gender and colonial history by examining cross border movements and networks of women and men that formed in East Asia and beyond in the early twentieth century. The project focuses on Korea, which had the distinctive experience of being colonized by Japan, a non-‐ Western colonial power, in the midst of significant cultural influence from Europe and the US. I investigate the ways in which Korea’s interactions with Europe, North America and other Asian countries transformed gender norms, domesticity and social engagements during Japanese rule. I pay particular attention to the crucial role of the Christian network that mediated and fostered the Korean elite’s transnational experiences."
