NIAS and ADI invite you to a brown bag lecture on:
Worlding cities through their climate projects? Urban ecological experiments in Europe and Asia
This talk sketches an emerging moral geography of urban interventions in the name of climate change, pointing to how this domain interrelates large-scale European and Asian cities in novel ways. Against this backdrop, I discuss two research projects in which I am involved. First, an inquiry into climate mitigation and adaptation interventions in the built environments of three different cities on three continents, Kyoto (Japan), Surat (India) and Copenhagen (Denmark). Second, efforts to map out on-going climate policy experiments in major world port cities in Europe and East Asia. Urban climate interventions, I suggest, provide a fruitful lens through which to interrogate contemporary changes in cultural and political geographies, including what anthropologist Aihwa Ong call 'worlding', i.e. Asian urban experiments in the art of being global.
