Energy Diplomacies of East Asian States

Christopher M. Dent, Professor of East Asia's International Political Economy, Department of East Asian Studies, and White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC), University of Leeds, will visit the University of Copenhagen to strengthen the link between the two universities and to explore the possibilities for collaboration with Professor Jakob R. Munch from the Dept. of Economics and Professor Jørgen Delman from the Dept. of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies.

Abstract: ‘Understanding the Energy Diplomacies of East Asian States'

East Asia will have a more profound impact on global energy security than any other region as its burgeoning demand for energy fuels, spurred principally by China, is expected to continue growing at over twice the world average in the next few decades. This presentation by Christopher Dent examines the reasons why we may expect the energy diplomacies of East Asian states to become an increasingly salient feature of East Asian states' foreign policy and international relations in the foreseeable future, and thereby significantly shape the nature of the region's international political economy. He also presents an analytical framework through which the energy diplomacies of East Asian states may be better understood.
