Research seminar with Prof. Charles F. Keyes
On 1 September, 14.30 - 16.00 the Department of Anthropology hosts a research seminar with Charles F. Keyes, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and International Studies, University of Washington.
"From Peasant to Cosmopolitan Villagers: Refiguring the ‘Rural' in Northeastern Thailand"
Abstract
In May 2010 the Thai military put an end to several months of
demonstrations by Red Shirt protestors in Bangkok. The protestors, in
their tens of thousands, came primarily from rural northeastern
Thailand, where Professor Keyes has done ethnographic fieldwork since
the early 1960s. In this talk, he will provide a background for the
recent political conflicts, arguing that northeastern villagers have
become workers in a global system of labor and see themselves as
cosmopolitans, even while retaining their identity as 'villagers'.
All are welcome!
