ECCS 10th anniversary

The EUROPEAN CENTRE FOR CHINESE STUDIES (ECCS) located at Peking University will celebrate its 10th anniversary on 16.9.2011 by conducting two workshops on: "China Studies" and "Philosophy in Action". 

The event has been organized by Professor Jørgen Delman with colleagues from the partner universities, Peking University, Frankfurt University, and Tübingen University.

Jørgen Delman will give a lecture at the event titled: From Sinology to China Studies: What can China Studies contribute as an area study?, and Associate Professor Thomas Brudholm will speak on: Hate and reconciliation: A philosophical perspective. Associate Professor Bent Nielsen will chair the workshop on "Philosophy in Action".

The President of Peking University and the Danish Ambassador to China, Friis Arne Petersen, will speak at an official reception at the event. 

ECCS was set up in 2001 with the aim to promote Sino-European collaboration in language-based China studies. Between 2001 and 2011, 968 students from the European universities (incl. 170 from Copenhagen University) studied at ECCS making it the program with the highest number of European students at Peking University. Among the alumni a sizable number now live and work in China or are engaged in China or Asia related jobs. For the future the partners strive to facilitate exchange opportunities also for PKU students to Europe.

During the over 10 years of its existence, 15 faculty members from Peking University (from the Depts. of Philosophy and History) were invited to the European partner universities for research stays varying from 3 months to one year. There, they conducted research and taught courses in Chinese and their subject matter to advanced students, giving the European students a rare glimpse into the contemporary research work of Chinese scholars.

Apart from faculty members, also several of the teachers working for ECCS were invited to Europe to enrich their own teaching experience and better understand the background of their students.

For the future, the partners plan to expand their cooperation to academic research based at the ECCS.
