ADI is pleased to announce the guest lecture "The psychological importance of ritualized gift exchange in modern Japan" with Professor Helmut Morsbach, Temple University, Tokyo.
Abstract
"The psychological importance of ritualized gift exchange in modern Japan"
Ritualized gift exchange was and is widespread in Japan. This is due to the specific (but not completely unique) Japanese nature of social obligations called 'on', 'giri' and 'ninjoo' (as defined by Prof. Harumi Befu). Apart from regular gift exchange, specific ways of dealing with surplus gifts will be discussed, as well as the greater ability of many Japanese to guess the contents of wrapped gifts. What role does money play in gift exchange? What is the specific ritual of exchanging gifts? Is there a possible connection between gifts and bribery? Further points to be made: The practice of immediate (token) return gifts and delayed return gifts; as well as changes in gift- giving practices over the years (e.g. Internet use).
