PhD course

The Research Programme in Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen is organising a one-day course for PhD students on the aesthetic aspects of religion and rituals on 10 February 2011.

The keynote speaker is Professor Jürgen Frembgen, Munich, well-known for his studies on performative and aesthetic dimensions of popular piety in Pakistan. Theoretical aspects of the theme will be introduced and Jürgen Frembgen's recent documentary film At the Shrine of the Red Sufi. Five Days and Nights on Pilgrimage in Pakistan will be screened, followed by a seminar discussion on methodological aspects of documentation and analyses of rituals and aesthetics.

The second part of the seminar will have the form of a workshop and provide an opportunity to present on-going projects and receive comments from Jürgen Frembgen and other members of the research network Muslim Devotion. The workshop is open to a wide range of projects in the field of religion, performance and aesthetics.

Deadline for registration: 1 February 2011.
Full day participation (incl. paper presentation) is nominated 2.5 ECTS.
