ADI South Asia lecture - Abhijit Roy

Centre of Global South Asian Studies invites you to ADI Public Lectures on Popular Culture, Television and Globalization.

Abstract - Abhijit Roy

The paper maps the vision of the ‘modern' in Indian soap opera in an effort to complicate the popular binary of tradition/modernity and to broadly draw attention to the way the post-colonial negotiates the Global. It examines a television series Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin that seems to have gone beyond the soap opera's classical constituency of the family and the feudal regime of the feminine, debatably inaugurating in India a new trend in Hindi soaps and in the consumer cultures around them.
