Public talk by Professor Purwo Santoso
Welfare Regime for Democratizing Indonesia
A recent democracy study, conducted at the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with the University of Oslo (UiO), reveals that for Indonesians democracy means more than just political liberty. Other key factors are welfare creation, accumulation and distribution and the way they shape transformations toward democratic governance. Hence, democratization requires a change in the prevailing welfare regime. Studies suggest that democratization in Indonesia is suffering from stagnation. A careful research is required to map out the possible breakthrough.
