KJ Chen receives SHAFR Grant
In January, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) announced a number of awards at its luncheon at the American Historical Association conference in New Orleans. These awards recognize some of the best emerging scholars within the field.
Dr Kuan-Jen Chen has been selected as a winner of the SHAFR William Appleman Williams Junior Faculty Research Grant. This grant aims to support promising junior researchers to complete their first monographs concerning US foreign relations. KJ will use this invaluable grant to finalise his current book project: The Making of America’s Maritime Order in Cold War East Asia: Sovereignty, Local Interests, and International Security.
The book examines the rise of the Cold War order in East Asia and the Pacific from the late 1940s to the 1970s. KJ tells this story not simply from an American perspective (which dominates the usual narrative), but from Asian perspectives as well (specifically Japanese but also Chinese and Taiwanese).
