New ADI Professor Oscar Salemink
Professor Oscar Salemink has been appointed Full Professor in the Anthropology of Asia under the Asian Dynamics Initiative. Oscar Salemink will take up the position at the Department of Anthropology on 1 January 2011.
Oscar Salemink is Dutch citizen born in 1958. He was trained as a historian and anthropologist and received his PhD in anthropology in 1999 from the University of Amsterdam. From 1996 to 2001, he was Ford Foundation Program Officer, first in Bangkok and then in Hanoi. In 2001 he took up a position as associate professor (full professor since 2005) at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Free University of Amsterdam). From 2005 to 2008 he served as Head of Department.
Salemink has an impressive record of scholarly publications. In addition to his singleauthored English‐language book, The Ethnography of Vietnam's Central Highlands (2003) he has also been the senior editor or co‐editor of eight other books in English. His new co‐edited book, 'A World of Insecurity', represents a move beyond Asia, to consider anthropological perspectives on human security in a broader field.
