Globalization and Export Opportunities
Conveners: Jakob Roland Munch, Dept. of Economics, University of Copenhagen and Georg Schaur, Dept. of Economics, University of Tennessee
This panel will focus on aspects related to increased economic integration between Europe and Asia. Increasing globalization brings challenges as well as new opportunities for domestic firms. Firms and their workers are more exposed on domestic markets from increased competition from firms in Asia and other low income countries. But at the same time new markets emerge in Asia and in other regions and domestic firms have opportunities to gain from selling in these new markets. This panel will consider all papers in the field of international trade and globalization, but there will be a particular focus on how to exploit new opportunities in export markets. The panel will seek to provide answers to questions such as: What are the obstacles to enter new export markets? What roles do uncertainty and volatility play in exporting (and importing)? Are there substantial fixed costs involved in getting access to new markets? Are export promotion and export credit policies effective in helping firms overcome entry barriers and other obstacles? Are certain skills and job tasks needed for firms to become successful exporters? Are policies related to export promotion and educational training programs worthwhile seen from a political perspective?
