Public guest lecture: Participative Mapping for the Urban Poor of Jakarta

The Greater Jakarta government has several poverty alleviation programs. These programs are spread out based on collected demographic data on the Kelurahan (sub-district) level. However, the lack of genuine participation by the citizen causes many missed targets in the field. We are trying to do participatory socio-spatial mapping with the kampung (urban settlement) people, who are mostly wrongly targeted by the programs. With integrated methods of data collection, management (including validation and updating) and visualization we try to enable the citizens to be actively involved in an innovative and affordable way. Participatory mapping could also be used as a tool for raising awareness in communities, as well as a means to support critical dialogues on approaches to more site-sensitive upgrading and spatial planning. Such data could also support disaster preparedness and disaster response by building on already existing capacities and opportunities.
