Political Parties and Democracy in South Korea

Guest lecture by Erik Mobrand, Seoul National University

Political parties are crucial organs of representation in any democracy. South Korea's political parties are often understood as weak because of their short durations, small numbers of members, and faction-driven appearance. While these points contain truth, the weak institutionalization of parties belies the tremendous staying power enjoyed by stable sets of elites organized through parties. This talk suggests that if South Korea's political parties are looked at in another way -- in terms of what they actually do -- they can be understood as remarkably strong organizations.
