Chinese Female Workers' Subject and New Practices of Community-based Organizing

The People's Republic of China manufactures products for the whole world and the spectacular growth of the Chinese economy is wellknown. Who produces the many products that we purchase in this part of the world? Whose economic development is it and what is the situation of workers in China?

• A new working class is being made by the 150 million Chinese peasant-workers in industrial towns and cities
• The new working class actors are reacting to neoliberalism, global capital and patriarchal culture
• The new class of female migrant workers is imbued with gender, labour exploitation and class consciousness

Anthropologist Pun Ngai is Deputy Director of the joint Peking University and Hong Kong Polytechnical University, Social Research Centre and the author of Made in China. Women Factory Workers in a Global Workplace.

The guest lecture will take place on 17 March 2009 at CSS from 14-16.
