Zhiyuan Cui

Cui Zhiyuan is a Professor at the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University, Beijing. He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1995, where he was given the "Best Dissertation Award" from the American Political Science Association. Previously, he taught at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin, Germany; Harvard Law School; the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore; and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Professor Cui Zhiyuan is a renowned scholar in the field of Chinese economic development and market reform as well as political and legal philosophy in general. His research is characterized by an innovative approach to the social and economic developments of post-socialist China and by strong theoretical interests.

Of particular impact upon recent Chinese thought is his thesis on ‘institutional innovation and the second intellectual liberation' which was associated with the arrival of the ‘New Left'. The New Left shares a critical view of neo-liberalism and the status quo of reform China, and has called for social justice through substantial political reforms.

Cui has authored and edited several books including Politics: Theory Against Fate and Sustainable Democracy.
