Growth: Critical perspectives from Asia

5th International Conference
13-14 June 2013 – Asian Dynamics Initiative – University of Copenhagen

The social consequences of growth and transformation on the margins

Panel convenor: Ildiko Beller-Hann (Dept. of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen)

The panel invites papers from scholars studying growth and its social consequences in the macro–region of Asia, both in the past and the present. In line with the general theme of the conference, here growth is understood in a very broad sense, including economic growth but also going beyond it. Growth may be also approached through its opposites such as decrease and decline. It is important to consider the cultural, demographic , environmental and political contexts in which processes of transformation are embedded. The panel will focus on the implications of such transformations, historical and contemporary, qualitative and quantitative, for ordinary people situated away from well-established centres of power, people who are perceived and/or perceive themselves as peripheral and/or marginalized.
